Who owns the business and how did it start?
I am the owner and operator of hannahsoboes. In 1999, I felt a calling to leave a legacy in support of our oboe community. My parents couldn’t afford an oboe for me when I was in high school and the school rental was hideous and caused me to have a difficult time with the oboe. Having had this experience, I wanted to help players acquire the best possible instruments and make them affordable.

I started with one used Lorée oboe, and when I sold that oboe, I bought another one, and so forth. Now I stock over two hundred instruments in the inventory. Networking throughout our professional community and on behalf of needy students, schools, and non-profits, I underwrite assistance through the philanthropic arm of my business. The goal of the Oboe Fairy, related to the Judaic concept of Tikkun Olam, is to heal the world through philanthropy— for me, particularly in the US and global oboe communities. These acts of kindness and life-changing opportunities are underwritten with proceeds from the sale of affordable and accessible oboes, English horns, and oboes d’amore for players of all ages.

What expertise and services do you have to offer customers looking for a Fox instrument?
I have been an oboist for over 59 years. I am an experienced university instructor, studio instructor, and performer. With the size of the inventory that I offer to our community since 1999, I am personally familiar with the full range of quality instruments manufactured by Fox. I have the privilege of working with Tiffany Pan, a skilled and prominent performer in the Phoenix area and loved by her oboe students, as well as my newest employee Nicholas Alexander.

What is your favorite model Fox or Renard instrument?

I love the Fox 330 Renard oboe which is such a strong intermediate instrument for advancing students. I also love the entire line of Fox English horns. The fox English horns offer wonderful features for players of all ages and levels.

A fun fact, or anything else you’d like to add?
My 14-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever, “Clara Schuman” howls when I am setting up instruments for trial! She is quite the critic!
